March 6, 2005

Box Score

Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks couldn't wait to get on the field. They were supposed to first open their season last weekend, then yesterday, but weather or conditions caused by the weather, made them wait all the way until today. They came out hitting, but the Drexel Dragons came out hitting better against the Hawk pitching and took both games of a double header 14-2, 12-4.

Drexel (2-4) started game one by jumping out on senior starter Christina Mason (Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada/Lakehead Univ.) for two runs on two hits. Elizabeth Fuller doubled to center and scored Amanda Hastings who had singled and Chrissy Hulme who had drawn a walk. The Lady Hawks got out of the inning and got their own bats going.

With two outs senior Marlee Johnson (Stouffville, Ontario, Canada/Newmarket H.S.) singled up the middle. Following her in the line-up was fellow Canadian and new Lady Hawk Jenille Edwards (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas Aquinas SS) who made her presence known to Hawk fans by taking starting pitcher Molly Dacey out of the park to dead center field. UMES (0-2) had tied the score at two.

Drexel then put on a show for their fans plating six runs in the second and driving starter Mason from the hill. She would allow eight runs on eight hits, however only three were earned because of two UMES errors. The Dragons then welcomed new Lady Hawk pitcher Kristen Greenwood (Bel Air, MD/Catawba College) by recording five runs on four hits. Greenwood would go on to finish the game giving up six runs, five earned on six hits. Drexel added on run in the fifth. They recorded their first win, 14-2.

In the game Krista VanWert got the win pitching three hitless innings. She also went 3-4 with two runs in the game. Karen Morizi, Brianne Brown, Hulme, and Hastings each collected a pair of hits in the game.

In game two the Dragons again jumped out to an early lead as Greenwood took the mound again. They got three runs on three hits form Brown, Hastings, and Fuller who tripled in the inning. Joannae McClain also reached on a fielder's choice.

UMES rallied again. They welcomed starter Amanda Heyser with three runs and three hits of their own. Jennifer Wilson (Princess Anne, MD/Washington H.S.) started the game with a double to left center. Freshman Maribeth Kulynycz (Princess Anne, MD/Holly Grove Christian School) then singled to right and moving Wilson to third. Johnson then walked on a wild pitch, moving all the way to second, Kulynycz went to third and Wilson scored. With only one out Mason singled to second, driving I a run and moving Johnson to third. Autumn Parson drew a walk and the Lady Hawks were in business. A wild pitch moved the runners along and forced home Johnson for the third UMES run of the inning.

Drexel took the lead in the second scoring one run when Morizi singled to score Van Wert who had reached on a single to lead-off the inning. With the score 4-3 after two the Lady Hawks looked for defense in the third inning. Instead the Dragons drove starter Kristen Greenwood from the mound batting around, scoring eight runs on four hits and three errors. Head Coach Kirkland Hall brought in the shortstop and closer Johnson to stop the bleeding. She did just that retiring the side with a pop-up and double play. She would finish the game allowing no hits.

The Lady Hawks would get back on the board in the fourth inning as Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett H.S.) would single to third with two outs. After a walk by Heather Patnode (Jefferson, MD/Brunswick H.S.) Wilson would get another double to score Bailey but would get thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Patnode's run would not count.

Kulynycz, Johnson, Mason, and Bailey would all get one hit apiece to Wilson's pair of hits. Drexel topped the Hawks, 12-4.

UMES gets back in action on March 9, 2005 at the University of Maryland with a double header at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
