UMES SPLITS IN DOUBLEHEADER WITH HAMPTON

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team upended Hampton (HU) Sunday afternoon, downing the visiting Lady Pirates 3-2 in the first game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader but dropping the 3-0 decision in the second contest at Hawks Field.

In game one, freshman Maribeth Kulynycz went 2-3 at the plate and added a run to help UMES (5-21, 4-10 MEAC) to the win, while pitcher Kristen Greenwood kept Hampton (16-12, 9-3 MEAC) in check by giving up just two hits in seven innings of work on the mound to record her third win of the season.

The Lady Hawks scored their first run of the game in the first inning, as Marlee Johnson reached on an error and then scored on a flyout by Jenille Edwards. Kulynycz added UMES' second run in the third when Edwards drove her home on a fielder's choice.

Johnson singled to send Latoya Bailey across the plate at the bottom of the sixth to push the Lady Hawk lead to 3-0 going into the final inning.

Kristine Minter drove in two runs to put Hampton on board at the top of the seventh but UMES ended the game with the next batter, as Yonetti Gwaltney popped to Bailey and helped secure the win for the Lady Hawks.

Kulynycz finished the game with two hits, while Johnson and Ashley Jones each finished with a hit. Gwaltney led the Lady Pirates with one hit.

In the second contest, Hampton broke a 0-0 deadlock with a run in the fourth inning, as Maggie Wolfe scored an unearned run due to a fielding error. The Lady Pirates added two more insurance runs in the fifth to push their lead to 3-0.

Hampton allowed just two base runners over the final two innings and threw out Johnson and Heather Patnode in a game ending double play in the seventh to preserve their lead. Kera Mathes and Jennifer Gonzales combined to scatter five UMES hits over seven innings, as Mathes picked up her fifth win of the year.

Johnson, Jones and Patnode each finished the game with one hit, as did Jennifer Wilson and Tiffany Dingle, while Mathes led the Lady Pirates with a two hits.

UMES will face Lafayette in non-conference play on Tuesday, April 12, battling the Leopards in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
