PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Jenille Edwards went 5-for-8, including a perfect 4-4 outing in game 2 to go along with one run and three RBI, as UMES defeated Morgan State, 7-1 and 4-3, to complete a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader sweep at Hawks Field.
The Lady Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Edwards grounded out to score Johnson, who reached base with a single to left field. Freshman Maribeth Kulynycz added the second run for UMES (7-23, 6-10 MEAC) later in the inning, scoring an unearned run on a wild pitch by Keyana Smith.
The Lady Hawks added another run in the second and two more in the third. Stephanie Braxton scored the third run for UMES while Christina Mason doubled to left field to send home Ashley Jones and Dana Blakey, giving the Lady Hawks a 5-0 advantage after three innings.
Morgan State (3-24, 2-10 MEAC) tallied their only run of the game in the sixth when Rachel Allan crossed the plate off of a wild pitch. UMES sealed the win at the bottom of the inning, adding two runs on one hit to give them the 7-1 victory.
The nightcap started similar to the first contest, with Edwards driving in Johnson for the first run of the game. Brianne Gutierrez tied the score up in the fourth inning, crossing the plate on a passed ball to knot things up 1-1.
The Lady Bears would claim their first and only lead of the game with two runs on one hit in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Allan hit an inside the park home run, a hard line drive down center field, to score Victoria Jones. Allan followed Jones and crossed the plate herself to give Morgan State a two run advantage.
The Lady Hawks however, rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson led off with a double before Kulynycz singled to get on base. Edwards blasted a triple down right center to score Johnson and Kulynycz. Edwards then scored the game winning run on a single by co-captain Jennifer Wilson, giving UMES the come from behind victory over the Lady Bears.
Johnson finished 4-6 on the day with three runs and one RBI, while Mason added three RBI to go along with one hit.
The Lady Hawks continue MEAC play by hosting Delaware State for a doubleheader on April 16 starting at 2 p.m.
