PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (6-34, 1-17) lost its final home game of the season to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Bethune-Cookman (18-23, 10-4), 9-3. The Fighting Hawks fell 1-17 in MEAC play as they dropped their final 15 conferences games in a row.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first. A two-out walk, double and single plated the two runs. UMES answered with a lead off triple by Joel Maher and then a sacrifice fly to deep center by Anthony Jackson.
With a slim 2-1 advantage, Bethune-Cookman added three in the top of the third on four hits, including an RBI-double by Borges. In the bottom of the fourth, senior Brandon McCabe led off the inning with a double to left and scored on a bunt base-hit by Morgan Schirmer.
Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, UMES surrendered two more runs before scoring its third run, as once again a lead off runner reached base and the Fighting Hawks scored. Jackson's two-out single up the middle scored Maher from second.
In the seventh inning, senior Rob Benak replaced Pete Mayta on the mound and quickly retired the first three batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, the third and final senior playing in their final home game, Butch Mills singled to center with one-out.
The top of the order for the maroon and gray was very successful on the afternoon as Maher and Jackson combined to go 3-6 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, two runs scored and two RBI's.
As for the senior's, Brandon McCabe went 1-4 with a double and a run scored, Butch Mills was 1-2 with a walk, while Rob Benak was 0-4 at the plate, but pitched three innings allowing just one run, while striking out one with no walks.
UMES will conclude its regular-season with a long road trip to Morehead State (2 games) and West Virginia University (3 games). Following the conclusion of the regular-season, the Fighting Hawks will take the #7 seed in the MEAC tournament, in Orlando, Florida.
