Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team split a doubleheader with Coppin State Saturday afternoon. The Lady Hawks lost the first game 3-1 but took the second 5-3 behind a three-run third inning.

Coppin (2-24, 2-12 MEAC) scored unearned runs in the third and fourth, respectively, to take a 2-0 lead after four innings. The Lady Eagles added to their lead three innings later, as Christen Glascoe tripled and was sent across the plate by Raquel Sealy to give Coppin the 3-0 advantage going into the bottom seventh.

UMES (4-20, 3-9 MEAC) got something together at the bottom of the inning, as senior Ashley Jones singled to get on base for the Lady Hawks. Pinch hitter Autumn Parson hit a double in the next at bat, which scored pinch runner Stephanie Braxton and gave the Lady Hawks their first run of the game.

With Parson on base and Marlee Johnson walked three batters later, UMES tried to keep up the momentum. But they were left stranded, and the Lady Eagles walked away with the slim 3-1 victory over the Hawks.

Coppin took a 3-0 lead in the second game but UMES responded in the bottom third, adding three runs of their own as Christina Mason, Jenille Edwards and Heather Patnode each scored to tie things up going into the fourth inning.

Edwards added her second run of the game in the fifth, as senior Jennifer Wilson tripled down the middle to send her home. Wilson would cross the plate off of a wild pitch later in the inning to give the Lady Hawks a two run advantage, a 5-3 lead after five.

The Lady Eagles tried to mount a comeback but UMES would give up no runs in the final two innings, helping to seal the win for the Lady Hawks.

Johnson went 3-6 on the day, including two doubles, while Edwards finished 2-7 with two runs. Parson went 2-3 with one RBI.

UMES will face off against Hampton in their next matchup, battling the Lady Pirates at home on Sunday, April 10 at 2:00pm.
