WASHINGTON D.C.- The Howard University women's volleyball team downed UMES 3-2 (27-30, 30-24, 26-30, 30-23, 15-11), to pick up its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season on Tuesday night.
UMES (1-9, 0-2 MEAC) showed aggression early in the match as they went up by as much as six, 14-8, in Game One, but Howard fought back to tie the game at 20. The Lady Hawks proved to be too much for the Lady Bison eventually winning Game One, 30-27. The Lady Bison rallied together and got off to a hot start in Game Two opening up with a 6-1 run. The Lady Hawks gathered themselves and went on a 6-1 run of their own pulling within two points and eventually tying the game at 18. The Lady Bison held the Lady Hawks to just six additional points in the game, winning Game Two, 30-24.
UMES and Howard (2-8, 1-0 MEAC) exchanged points in Game Three with the Lady Hawks eventually downing the Lady Bison, 26-30. It was all Howard in Game Four. After a 2-0 deficit the Lady Bison put downed seven straight points to go up 7-2 and never looked back, eventually winning Game Four, 30-23, to send the match to a deciding Game Five. Howard carried their momentum into Game Five going up by four, 8-4, before the teams switched sides. UMES picked up a little momentum after the switch, but could pulled back falling to Howard, 15-11, in the deciding game.
The Lady Hawks had two players finish with double-digit kills led by freshman Chanita Wesley with 18 and senior Eriel Jeffery with 15. Wesley also had a team high 16 digs, while Yael Rozner chipped in with a double-double of 47 assists and 13 digs. Jeffery and Likica Grceva added 13 digs on the defensive end.
Morgan Maxwell led the way for the Lady Bison with 26 kills.
The maroon and gray return to action on Thursday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Connecticut to face Quinnipiac in a 7 p.m. contest.
