PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks finished their final home cross-country meet in style, taking a two point advantage, 40-42 to edge Howard University and claim the title of the 2005 Cappy Anderson Invitational. The Hawks showed their dominance early placing four runners in the top seven positions with Alfred Singoei (25.25.10) and Geoffrey Rutto (25.52.45), taking the first and second places respectively.
Not far behind were Christopher Havrilla (27.04.96) and Clayton James (27.20.34) who crossed the stripe in sixth and seventh place respectively. The five mile course was covered in clouds for the entire race and the chilliness of the wind allowed Singoei to claim the third fastest time on the course this season. Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks was their fifth place finisher Jason Daly (33.01.99) who took 25th overall and edged the 26th place runner by one second. One second slower and the Hawks may not have been the victors of the race.
Also placing in the top 30 for the Hawks was Glenn Grainger in 27th and William McCullough in 30th.
Howard was second in the all Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) event two points behind the Hawks. Amin Garnett was the fastest Bison taking home fourth place with a time of 26.38.89. Immediately behind him was Cordis Sanfield in fifth, running a 26.55.38.
In third place with 55 points was Coppin State University, who saw Anthony Littlejohn take third place in the race, running 26.29.51 for their best finisher. Jansen Archer was also in the top ten (10th) with a time of 28.27.55.
Rounding out the race was Morgan State who tallied 77 points. Nathaniel McDonald took home eighth place running 27.41.65.
The Hawks next hit the road again in two weeks, traveling to Norfolk, Va.
