WASHINGTON D.C. - The UMES volleyball team picked up a non-conference victory over Howard Tuesday night at Burr Gymnasium. The Lady Hawks downed the Lady Bison 3-2 (30-24, 30-15, 25-30, 28-30, 15-9) to improve to 10-10 on the season. The loss drops Howard to 4-12.
Senior Melanie Durimel led the way for the maroon and gray with a match-high 18 kills. Classmate Kim Braxton finished with a career-high 17 kills to go along with 15 digs while freshman Caylin Woodward added a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs.
Setter Yael Rozner contributed 42 assists and 15 digs while libero Stephanie Braxton led the squad in digs with 23. Adora Luster also chipped in defensively with five block assists.
Janel James' double-double of 13 kills and 22 digs paced the Lady Bison. Brooke Strode led the squad in kills with 14.
UMES set the tone early in the match going up by as many as seven points before winning game one 30-24. The maroon and gray held HU to just 15 points in game two and held a double-digit lead throughout much of the decision while hitting .459.
Both teams played each other close in game three until a kill by Brooke Strode at 13-12 spurred a 5-0 run by the Bison. A Janel James kill at 23-16 gave Howard a six-point advantage, their largest of the game. HU capitalized on UMES errors late in game four to pull even with the Lady Hawks. Key kills by Woodward and K. Braxton in the fifth and final game allowed the maroon and gray to win the two hour battle.
UMES next travels to Orangeburg, South Carolina Oct. 13-15 for the annual MEAC Roundup.
