PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The George Washington (GW) volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (30-19, 31-29, 30-14) non-conference win over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Friday night at the Hytche Center.
Senior Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France/Univ. de Marne la Valle) and freshman Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) each had 11 kills to pace the Lady Hawks. Kim Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass H.S.) had 11 digs on the defensive end while Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) contributed 31 set-assists.
The Colonials (12-10) got a match-high 20 kills from Janine Brown. Kelly Kabbes and Juliene McLaughlin chipped in with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
The maroon and gray took an 11-4 lead to start the second game, their largest of the match. McLaughlin's kill at 12-7 spurred a 12-5 GW run, however, and allowed the Colonials to tie things up at 16-16.
The two teams traded points over the next few possessions until a Woodward kill and a Maja Baltic (Belgrade, Serbia/KGB) service ace gave the Lady Hawks a three-point advantage at 26-23. George Washington capitalized on several maroon and gray attacking errors in the final moments to take the 31-29 game two victory.
UMES (14-13) is off for one week, resuming play on Nov. 3 in an 8:00 p.m. non-conference road match at Wagner.
