PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (32-30, 31-29, 30-25) non-conference win over Delaware State (DSU) Tuesday night at the Hytche Center.
The Lady Hawks got a team-high 15 kills from senior Melanie Durimel (Neuilly sur Marne, France/Univ. de Marne la Valle). Sophomore Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) added 11 kills while Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) and Stephanie Braxton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass H.S.) contributed 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Setter Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel/Kiriat Haim H.S.) chipped in with a double-double of 39 assists and 10 digs.
The Lady Hornets were led by Kinga Muszynski's 16 kills. Cassandra Joyner led the squad in digs with 15.
The maroon and gray hit .217 the entire match compared to .116 by Delaware State (10-21). DSU held a slim advantage defensively as they outdug the Hawks 56-51.
UMES (17-13) took a seven point advantage, their largest lead of the match, in the first game when an Eller kill pushed the maroon and gray up 14-7. A kill by Muszynski spurred a quick 5-0 run by the Hornets late in the game to tie things up at 29, but consecutive kills by Eller and Durimel sealed the close 31-29 victory for the Hawks.
The maroon and gray return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. non-conference match against Morgan State at the Hytche Center.
