Final Stats
BALTIMORE, MD - The UMES softball team fell in a close doubleheader against the Coppin State Lady Eagles on March 8. UMES lost the first game 6-5 and dropped the second contest 7-5.
In the first game, Nicole Buchko's double in the first inning drove in Christen Glascoe as Coppin took a slim 1-0 lead over the visiting Lady Hawks. UMES, however, evened the score in the third inning as Charlotte Ngondi crossed the plate for the maroon and gray.
CSU got an unearned run at the bottom of that inning and added four runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 advantage over the Lady Hawks.
UMES had a hot sixth inning as they got four runs on three hits. Ngondi's single allowed Kristin Greenwood to score. Kendra Saunders later drove in Christina Mason for the second run of that inning while Heather Patnode's single sent home Saunders and Ngondi, closing the Lady Hawks within one run of Coppin.
The maroon and gray could not get things going in the seventh, however, as Greenwood, Candace Tyler and Shaunte Gaddy each went down in order.
Ngondi went 3-4 in the first game with two runs and one RBI. Saunders finished 2-4 with one run batted in while Patnode had a 2-3 outing against the Lady Eagles. Greenwood and Gaddy each picked up a hit for UMES while Patnode had a team high two RBI's. Greenwood, Saunders and Mason also had one run each for the Lady Hawks.
Glascoe finished 3-4 for Coppin State while Buchko and Kendra Bates each finished 2-3. Buchko drove in a game high four RBI's.
The maroon and gray took advantage of CSU's errors in the first inning of game two when Mason scored on an error by Jenny Harrell.
The Lady Eagles scored three unearned runs in the bottom of that inning when Glascoe, Buchko and Missy Bell each crossed the plate for Coppin State.
Saunders scored on an error by CSU's outfield in the third inning but the Lady Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom third as Patricia Pabon scored on an error by Ngondi.
Jenille Edwards' double in the fourth inning allowed Mason and Gaddy to cross the plate, evening the score at 4-4. Edwards drove in Mason again in the sixth, but Coppin had three runs on five hits in the bottom sixth to get the 7-5 come from behind victory over UMES.
Edwards finished that game 3-4 with three RBI's while Ngondi and Mason each picked up a hit for the maroon and gray. Mason also tabbed three runs while Saunders and Gaddy had one run each.
Bell finished 2-3 for CSU. Harrell, Pabon and Bates each collected a hit while Pabon also drove in two runs.
