HAWKS SPLIT WITH DELAWARE STATE IN MEAC MATCH UP

March 18, 2006

Box Score

Princess Anne, MD - Dustin Longchamps threw seven and one third innings in game one, allowing just seven hits and two runs, with only one earned, while striking out eight on his way to his second win of the year. He gave UMES their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the year with a 6-2 win over the Hornets of Delaware State University (DSU) (8-15-1, 1-2 MEAC)

DSU got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning when Brandon Gravely singled to score Tyler Hostetter who had reached on a fielder's choice.

UMES took the lead right back. They plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Gaines led-off by reaching base on an error by the third baseman. Greg Cathell advanced him on a groundout to second. He didn't need to. Justin Hoban hit his third triple of the year, this one to right center and plated Gaines. He then scored when Bernie Stratchko reached on another error at third.

The Hawks (4-15-1, 1-1 MEAC) added four more runs in the fourth. They came mostly on Hornet miscues as DSU committed seven errors in the game. Stracthko led-off the fourth with a single to left. He advanced on a Ronald Quick shot up the middle. Morgan Schirmer would then draw a walk to load the bases with no outs.

After Jackson struck out, Mayta would lay down the suicide squeeze to plate Stratchko but the governor would pardon him, as the first baseman would bobble the ball and keep the bases juiced. DSU starter Nick Bitter tried to catch Mayta napping at first but threw it away and everyone would get two bases. Schirmer and Quick would score and Mayta would take third. With two outs Joel Maher dug-in and delivered, picking up the RBI as Mayta scored on a single up the middle.

The Hornets added a run in the fifth but the runs held up as UMES picked up the MEAC win. Mike Roberts relieved Longchamps to earn the save, his second on the year.

The Hawks dropped game two 14-5 to DSU after they got in trouble early.

Freshman starter Jamar Cadejuste couldn't survive the first inning, walking three and giving up four earned runs without recording an out. Head Coach Bobby Rodriguez went to the pen to look for an out. Michael Willey came in and only managed one. He allowed two walks and two hits and three earned runs. The Hawks went to their third pitcher of the inning, Daniel Sterling, who got out of the inning and settled in. He would work five and two third innings, giving up six hits and three walks and three earned runs.

While Sterling pitched well the damage was done, Delaware State got seven first inning runs on just three hits and two Hawk errors.

UMES got two runs back in the first when Gaines led-off with a double down the left field line. Maher followed him with a triple to right to score Gaines. Hoban hit an infield single that would score Maher.

The Hawks got one more run back in the second when Schirmer led-off with a triple to right center. Mayta plated him on a sacrifice fly to right.

Delaware State increased their lead with one run in the third and three in each of the fifth and seventh innings.

The Hawks added on in the bottom of the seventh on a Cathell single that plated Mayta who led-off with a single.

Chase Kornermann picked up the win, his second of the year, in a complete game effort. He allowed 11 Hawk hits, one-walk and five earned runs. He struck out four. Cadejuste picked up the loss to fall to 0-2.

On the day UMES had some solid outings. Gaines went 3-9 with a two runs, Maher was 3-8 with two RBI, Hoban was 3-8 with two runs and two RBI and Schirmer was 2-5 with a pair of runs.

The Hornet's Hostetter went a combined 5-10 with three runs and three RBI while Jared Lineweaver, C.J. Acker and Justin Bittner all had a pair of hits in game two. Bittner also had two RBI and three runs in the nightcap.

These same two MEAC teams collide again tomorrow at Hawks stadium in the rubber match scheduled for a noon start.
