FIGHTING HAWKS TOP DELAWARE STATE, 11-10, TO WIN SERIES

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team picked up another conference win today as they defeated Delaware State University (DSU) 11-10 at Hawks stadium. The Fighting Hawks scored 11 runs on 11 hits with five of those runs coming in the seventh inning. UMES split with DSU in a doubleheader yesterday taking game one 6-2 and dropping game two 14-5.

Jason Janeski pitched well for the Fighting Hawks picking up his second win of the season. In seven and two-thirds innings, he allowed just seven hits, three walks and seven runs, with four of those being earned. Mike Roberts picked up his third save of the season in just one inning's worth of work.

Greg Cathell went 3-4, scoring a pair of runs and recording two RBI while Justin Hoban went 2-4, scoring two runs and collecting one RBI.

UMES (5-15-1,2-1 MEAC) opened the game with 1-0 lead as Cathell singled through the left side. Hoban would double scoring Cathell. In the bottom of the second the Hawks would score two more runs on two hits. DSU would tie it up 3-3 in the top of the second and third innings.

In the sixth inning the Hawks would score another run on two hits. A walk from Pete Mayta would open the bottom of the seventh. Eric Gaines would reach on a fielders' choice as Mayta grounded out to the shortstop. Next Joel Maher would single up the middle. Cathell would follow with a single of his own through the right side scoring Gaines. A walk by Hoban would load the bases for the Fighting Hawks. A triple by Bernie Stratchko and a throwing error by Tyler Hostetter would score Hoban, Cathell and Maher.

UMES led 9-3.

DSU (8-16-1,1-3 MEAC) would not give in, as they scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning. The inning began with a single to right field by C.J. Acker. Brandon Gravely and Matt Carey would follow with back-to-back singles up the middle. Acker then scored on the single from Carey. Randy Boyer walked to load the bases.

The Hawks went to the bullpen. Kenny Richardson would come into the game and take the mound for Janeski. Then a single up the middle from Justin Bittner would score Boyer, Carey and Gravely. The Hornets would catch up, making the score 9-7.

Morgan Schirmer led off the eighth inning with a double to left center. He then scored on a single through the right side from Mayta. Gaines would reach on a hit by pitch and a walk by Maher would load the bases. Mayta would score on a sacrifice fly from Cathell.

During their last at bat the Hornets give the Hawks a run for their money as they scored three more runs on just one hit. Back to back walks for Jim Johnson and Jared Lineweaver would start off the ninth inning. Acker was hit by a pitch and that would load the bases for DSU. Hostetter would single to right field plating Johnson. Carey would then groundout to third base but Lineweaver would score. Acker then scored on a wild pitch. Down one run with two outs, Boyer would fly out to right to end the inning and preserve the win for the Hawks.

Billy Keyes (1-5) took the loss for the Hornets.

The Fighting Hawks are on the road next as they take on the Coppin State Eagles in a doubleheader on March 25, 2006 in Baltimore, Maryland at noon. Game three of the series will be played in Baltimore as well on Sunday March 26 at 1:00 pm.
