COPPIN STATE TAKES DOWN UMES IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES Lady Hawks fell in a non-conference doubleheader against Coppin State (CSU) this afternoon at Hawks Field. The Lady Hawks dropped their first game 3-0 and lost a close second decision 4-3.

In the second contest of the day, UMES (3-32) out hit the Lady Eagles 6-4 and took the lead from CSU in the third inning when they scored three runs on three hits. Latoya Bailey's single plated Shaunte Gaddy for UMES' first run of the game. Charlotte Ngondi crossed the plate off a wild pitch for the maroon and gray's second run while Heather Patnode's single sent Bailey home.

Coppin State (12-15) scored their first run of the game in the second inning when Nicole Buchko's single plated Melissa Bell. CSU put two more on the board in the fifth and tied the score at 3-3 when Buchko and Cheryl Mastalerz each crossed the plate. The Lady Eagles took the 4-3 lead in the sixth when Bell scored on a wild pitch.

Bailey finished 2-4 with one run and one RBI while Jenille Edwards also picked up a pair of hits for the maroon and gray. Bell led Coppin State with a 2-3 outing to go along with two runs.

In the first game, Danielle Summerour struck out eight batters and gave up just three hits in the 3-0 CSU victory.

The Lady Eagles scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Keshia Robinson's double sent Mia Willis home while Bell's single plated Robinson. Patricia Pabon scored an unearned run for CSU after crossing the plate off a wild pitch.

UMES got two of their three hits in the bottom seventh. With two outs, Patnode singled and Christina Mason doubled to get on base, but Summerour struck out Candace Tyler to seal the win for Coppin State.

Patnode, Mason and Kendra Saunders each went 1-3 for the Lady Hawks while Willis finished 3-4 with one run.

The Lady Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 16, with a home doubleheader against Hampton beginning at 2:00 pm.
