PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Camille Whittaker had six hits and four runs to lead Hampton (HU) to a pair of non-conference victories at Hawks Field on Sunday. The Lady Pirates outslugged UMES 31-to-5 as HU took the 12-3, 15-0 doubleheader sweep.
In the first game, Kendra Saunders hit a solo home run, her eight homer of the season, to give the Lady Hawks the 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hampton got one back in the second when Maggie Wolfe homered to center field.
HU put five more on the board in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Whittaker doubled in a run in the fourth, but the Lady Hawks plated two runs in the bottom of that inning to cut the Lady Pirates lead to 7-3. Christina Mason's double scored Heather Patnode and Jenille Edwards for the maroon and gray's second and third run of the game.
Hampton added one more run in the fifth. HU plated four in the sixth inning when Whittaker's left field double scored Tesara Wiggins and Matthews. Brittany Davis was plated on a ground out by Kera Mathes while Whittaker scored an unearned run to put the Lady Pirates up 12-3.
Saunders finished 1-2 with one run and one RBI while Edwards and Mason each picked up a hit for the maroon and gray. Hampton got a 3-4 outing from Whittaker while Wolfe and Amanda Black each picked up a pair of hits. Black also earned the win while UMES' Kristin Greenwood was tagged with the loss.
The Lady Hawks got just two hits in the 15-0 loss to HU in the second game of the day. Charlotte Ngondi picked up a hit in the third inning while Saunders singled through the right side for her second hit of the day.
The Lady Pirates took a 3-0 lead in the second and opened the floodgates in the top third, scoring 11 runs on nine hits.
Ngondi and Saunders each finished 1-2 while HU's Whittaker finished 3-4 for the second consecutive game. Garcia also went 3-4 while Black, Davis and Wolf each picked up a pair of hits.
The Lady Hawks will visit Drexel on April 20 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
