Tallahassee, Fl. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team picked up another conference win tonight as they defeated Florida A&M University (FAMU) 7-2 at Moore-Kittles Field. UMES received another solid performance from starter Dustin Longchamps (6-4) aka "D-Train", who pitched all seven innings for the Fighting Hawks, giving up just two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five in the victory.
Second baseman Pete Mayta swung the bat well, going 2-3 including a double and plating a run. Right fielder Ronald Quick went 2-3, recording two RBI while designated hitter Justin Hoban went 2-4 including a double, registering two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
The Rattlers (11-27, 4-7 MEAC) opened the scoring the first inning as they plated one run on two hits.
The Hawks jumped on the board in the top of the third inning when Bernie Stratchko led-off with a single to third base. With one out Mayta singled and advanced to second on a throw which also advanced Stratchko to third. A wild pitch would plate Stratchko and advance Mayta to third. Mayta scored on a sacrifice fly-out from shortstop Eric Gaines.
Ahead 2-1, the Fighting Hawks would plate three more runs on four hits. Greg Cathell would open the inning with a double down the left field line. A double to right center from Hoban would plate Cathell. Hoban would then advance to third on a wild pitch. Jackson would join Hoban on the base paths via walk. With runners on first and third, a single to right center from Quick would score Hoban and advance Jackson to third. Stratchko would reach on a fielders' choice and receive an RBI as Quick would be called out at second while Jackson scored. Schirmer followed reaching on a fielders' choice as Stratchko also would be called out at second. Mayta would single to the pitcher and advance Schirmer to second. Gaines would end the inning with a fly-out to centerfield.
UMES (13-27-1, 7-7 MEAC) extended their lead 7-1 in the top of the fifth with two outs as Hoban reached on an infield single. Hoban would steal second and score on a double through the left side from Anthony Jackson. A single from Quick would plate Jackson. A fly-out to centerfield from Stratchko would end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, FAMU would plate their last run on one hit and one Hawk error to drop game two, 7-2.
Allen DeCambra, Peter Guastella, Anthony Mazzeo and Cirilo Manego all had one hit apiece for the Rattlers.
FAMU starter Chad Smith (3-5) took the loss as he went five innings allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits while striking out none.
The Hawks will meet back at Moore-Kittles field to take on the Rattlers in the final game of the series Thursday April 27, 2006 at 4:00 pm.
