DOVER, DEL. - The Lady Hawk softball squad suffered two losses to Delaware State on April 26. UMES dropped the first game 11-0 and fell in the second 13-2 in a pair of non-conference road decisions at Hornets Field.
In game two, Delaware State (27-20) took a 3-0 lead after plating one run in the first and adding two more on the board in the second. UMES (3-38) scored two runs of their own in the top third when Latoya Bailey's single scored Shakeyah Habib, who got on base with her lead off single. Charlotte Ngondi also crossed the plate for the Lady Hawks when she scored an unearned run off a throwing error by DSU's Diana Gomez.
The Lady Hornets scored four in the bottom third to take a 7-2 lead. Delaware State plated six more in the fourth, three coming off the bat of Catrina Ansbach when she homered to left field with two runners on base.
Ansbach finished the game 2-3 with one run and four RBI's while Gomez also picked up a pair of hits. Bailey, Habib and Kendra Saunders each picked up one hit for the maroon and gray.
In game one, the Lady Hornets outhit the Lady Hawks 15-2 in the 11-0 mercy win.
Delaware State led 3-0 before scoring seven in the third to take control of the game. Samantha Snow doubled in a run, while Megan Lambertz, Gomez and Katie Powell had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Ngondi had a hit in the first inning for UMES. Kristen Greenwood picked up the other hit for the Lady Hawks in the second inning with her left field double.
Lambertz was 4-4 with two runs batted in and Gomez had three hits and three RBI's to lead the Lady Hornets. Greenwood finished 1-2 while Ngondi went 1-3.
The Lady Hawks will play their next contest on the road when they take on Morgan State in a MEAC decision on Friday, April 28. UMES battles the Lady Bears again on Saturday, April 29 in Princess Anne for the maroon and gray's senior day.
