PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The Lady Hawk softball squad split with Morgan State for the second time in as many days Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. UMES took down the Lady Bears 1-0 in the first game but fell 8-4 in the second decision in a non-conference doubleheader. The twinbill marked the final home contests for seniors Charlotte Ngondi, Jenille Edwards, Christina Mason and Heather Patnode.
Edwards finished 4-6 on the day with two RBI's while Ngondi went 2-6 with two runs. Latoya Bailey picked up two hits for UMES (5-40) while Candace Tyler, Shakeyah Habib and Reva Oliver each had one hit for the Lady Hawks.
Megan Jimenez went 4-8 for Morgan State (10-27) while Krystal Gaud and Annika Romeyn each picked up three hits on the day.
The first game was a close knit decision as both teams remained scoreless going into the seventh inning. Habib knocked in the winning run for UMES in the bottom seventh with a left field triple that plated Tyler, who reached base via walk.
Kristen Greenwood picked up the win for the Lady Hawks as she gave up just three hits in seven innings of work. Jimenez was tabbed with the loss and fell to 4-9 on the season.
The Lady Bears out hit UMES 11-to-6 in the second game took an early lead when Veronica Brown scored an unearned run in the first inning to give MSU the 1-0 advantage.
Morgan State plated three batters in the second and two more in the fourth for the 6-0 lead. UMES began to chip away at the lead in the bottom fourth, however, when Tyler crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Carolynn Howard. Edwards' center field double in the fifth plated Ngondi while Patnode drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Bailey.
Edwards' left field single in the sixth sent Ngondi home again, closing the Hawks to within two runs of the lead. MSU secured the win in the bottom seventh when Natosha Johnson and Elizabeth Fernandez each scored unearned runs for the Lady Bears.
UMES will now travel to Norfolk tomorrow, April 30 to close out the season with a non-conference doubleheader against the Spartans at 1 p.m.
