Daytona Beach, Fl. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball dropped their final game of the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) weekend series to Bethune-Cookman College, 10-3. Senior Greg Cathell recorded his 150th career hit today in the loss as the Fighting Hawks end their season with an 8-10 record in the MEAC.
Dustin "D-Train" Longchamps who started on the mound for the Hawks threw hard, but struggled to find the strike zone as he gave up five runs (all earned) on four hits and walked four. He took the loss for the maroon and gray ending the season with a 6-5 record.
Designated hitter Justin Hoban went 3-for-4 in the game while right-fielder Ronald Quick went 2-for-4, recording two RBI.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead, when on two-outs Longchamps walked three consecutive batters to plate centerfielder Jose Ortiz who reached on a single to centerfield.
BCC (24-22, 12-0 MEAC) would extend their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second by adding four more runs on four hits.
UMES (14-30-1, 8-10 MEAC) surrendered another four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Ken Richardson who replaced Longchamps on the mound was relieved by freshman Mike Roberts in the bottom of the third after an inning of work in which he gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits and walked three.
The Hawks finally answered with a run in the top of the fourth as Cathell would reach on an error from the Wildcat shortstop Chris Henault. Hoban and Quick would hit back-to-back singles to plate Cathell. Anthony Jackson would reach on a fielders' choice and receive an RBI as Cathell would score.
Trailing 9-1 in the top of the fifth, the maroon and gray would cross another two runs on four hits. With one out, Maher would hit a shot to right-field and advance to second on a single in the opposite direction from Cathell. A single from Hoban would advance both Maher and Cathell. Quick would slug out a two RBI single down leftfield line to plate both Maher and Cathell.
In the bottom of the eighth, BCC would plate their final run on four hits leaving two guys stranded.
Francisco Rodriguez (7-1) went the distance for the win, working seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits, and fanning five.
Ortiz had a good day at the plate for the Wildcats as he went 3-for-5 registering three runs and two stolen bases.
UMES ends their 12-day road trip and heads back home where they will rest and regroup until their final contest of the 2006 season in which they take on the Terps of the University of Maryland College Park on May 10, 2006 at 5:00 pm.
