Norfolk, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) split a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader with the Spartans of Norfolk State University (NSU) today on the diamond at Marty L. Miller field in Norfolk, Virginia. The Hawks picked up their fourth MEAC win of the year in game one behind a complete game outing from Dustin Longchamps who allowed just one earned run in seven innings of action.
Joel Maher led the attack picking up a pair of hits in each game while adding a run and two RBI. Greg Cathell went 3-5 with a RBI in game two while Ronald Quick and Eric Gaines both had two RBI on the day.
Michael Willey picked up the loss in game two after a solid start by Kevin Hillenburg.
UMES takes the week off and prepares for a four game series against the Aggies of North Carolina A & T, Easter weekend at Hawks Stadium. The first three games of the series will count as MEAC games.

T.J. Starkey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Moriba George (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.) combined for eight hits and seven stolen bases as host Norfolk State and Maryland-Eastern Shore split a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field. The Hawks (7-23-1, 4-5 MEAC) won game 1 5-3, but NSU (17-17, 7-2) battled back to take the second game 7-4.
In game 1, UMES pitcher Dustin Longchamps (4-3) scattered eight hits and allowed three runs, one earned, in going all seven innings. He walked six and struck out three, holding the Spartans at bay after the second inning.
Trailing 3-2, the Hawks took the lead for good on a two-out, two-run single by Ronald Quick in the fifth. They added insurance on Joel Maher's RBI double in the sixth.
The Spartans stranded 10 runners in the first game.
Spartan pitcher Mark Young (Norfolk, Va.) allowed just six hits. He gave up five runs, four earned, with three walks and four strikeouts to fall to 3-3 on the season.
Maher was 2-for-3 in the first game for UMES.
In game 2, the Spartans battled back from a pair of early deficits to take the rubber contest of the series. Starkey had an RBI double and Juan Serrano (Naugatuck, Conn.) an RBI single to give the Spartans a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Serrano added a sacrifice fly and Rocco Savage (Tampa, Fla.) an RBI single to give the Spartans some cushion in the bottom of the eighth.
Joey Seal (Newport News, Va.) improved to 2-3 on the season, tossing his first complete game of the year. He scattered seven hits and five walks to go with six strikeouts. All four runs that scored against Seal were unearned as NSU committed a season-high seven errors.
Ryan Reddick (Raleigh, N.C.) was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap, and Serrano was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Starkey and George had two hits apiece in both games.
