Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) had a team high 19 points but it was not enough as Coppin State (CSU) nipped UMES, 64-57, in a men's basketball decision Monday night at the Hytche Center.

The contest featured eight lead changes with the Hawks tying the score just once, at 6:31 in the first half when a Tyson trey tied things up at 21.

CSU held a five point lead with just over two minutes left in the first half before a lay-up by B.J. Nimocks (Detroit, Mich./Cloud County) at the buzzer cut the Eagle deficit to three, giving Coppin State the 32-29 advantage at the break.

UMES responded in the second half and outscored CSU 8-4 in the first five minutes of the stanza. A Tyson free-throw at 12:50 closed the Hawks within one point of the lead at 38-37. CSU answered with a 11-5 run over the next six minutes and saw their lead grow to nine when a pair of free-throws by Antwan Harrison put the Eagles up 53-44.

Tyson hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe with just under two minutes left to cut the CSU deficit to just a bucket, but that is the closest they would get as Coppin State held UMES scoreless for the final 1:39. Lay-ups by Tywain McKee and free-throws by Augustine Woodlin sealed the win for the Eagles.

The Hawks (3-18, 0-9 MEAC) got 17 points from senior Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown H.S.). Corey Brown (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C.) chipped in with 14 points to go along with a game high six steals.

McKee's 23 points paced the Eagles (6-15, 4-5 MEAC). Harrison added 17 on 6-for-12 shooting from the field.

UMES shot slightly better than CSU with the Hawks making 42% of their shots (22-of-52) compared to a 40% outing by the Eagles (20-of-51). Coppin State held an 18-6 advantage in points off turnovers and also outscored the maroon and gray 32-28 in the paint.

The Hawks return to action on Feb. 3 with a home contest against North Carolina A&T at 4:00 pm.
