PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Calvin Brown and Tynell Dunkley each had a double-double and Norfolk State (NSU) used a second-half run to pull away from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a 74-62 victory Wednesday night in the Hytche Center.
Brown led the Spartans with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Dunkey contributed 16 points and 10 boards in 31 minutes. Tony Murphy added 15 points on 4-for-13 shooting from the field.
The Hawks were paced by four players in double figures. Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Colby C.C.) and Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) had 17 points each while Corey Brown (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C.) chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finished with 11.
McMillion hit a free-throw at 13:14 in the second half to give UMES a 47-45 lead. NSU outscored the Hawks 13-2 over the next five minutes to claim a 12-point lead with just over eight minutes to play. The maroon and gray was able to trim the lead to six, but the Spartans pushed the lead back to double digits at the two minute mark.
Norfolk State (2-9, 2-0 MEAC) had a five-point lead at 3:15 in the first period but the Hawks clawed back with a quick 5-0 run to tie things up at 35 at the break.
UMES (2-11, 0-2 MEAC) shot 37% from the field and converted 10-of-15 from the charity stripe. NSU held a 45-28 rebound advantage but turned the ball over 25 times compared to 18 by the Hawks.
The maroon and gray next take on North Carolina A&T in a road contest on Jan. 6 at 4:00 pm.
