GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team rallied in the second half against N. Carolina A&T (NCAT) but it was not enough as the Hawks fell 80-66 in their first MEAC road decison of the year.
UMES (2-12, 0-3 MEAC) got a game-high 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting from Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.). Corey Brown (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C.) finished with 21 points while Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Colby C.C.) chipped in with 13.
NCAT (5-9, 1-1 MEAC) were paced by four players in double figures. Austin Ewing and Steven Rush had 16 points apiece while Greg Robers added 15. Jason Wills had 12 points off the bench for the Aggies.
The Hawks forced 26 A&T turnovers and outscored the Aggies 11-5 in second chance points.
N.C. A&T led by as many as 20 in the second half, but the maroon and gray slowly chipped away at the lead. Tyson's 3-pointer from the top of the key moved the lead to single digits at 61-53 with 8:26 to play. It was the first time the Hawks dwindled the lead under 10 since the 7:26 mark of the first half.
Later in the half, Tyson turned a Wills free throw miss into two quick points for UMES while Brown followed that with a fastbreak layup to get the lead under 10 again.
The maroon and gray will continue their road trip with a contest against South Carolina State on January 8 at 7:30 pm.
