HAWKS SURVIVE ANOTHER FIVE GAMES, TOP DELAWARE STATE 3-2

Oct. 7, 2007

Box Score

DOVER, Del. - It was unfamiliar territory for the Hawks as they faced Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Delaware State University (DSU) in Dover, but on another schools campus. Due to facility work the two teams played at nearby Wesley College and whether it was the unfamiliar environment or the fact they had played five games just one day before against Morgan State, the Hawks sputtered and went to another five game set before winning the match 3-2 (30-24, 24-30, 30-21, 24-30, 15-9).

The win improves the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to 17-3 and 6-0 in the MEAC. They run their current win streak to 15, one of the five longest in the nation. DSU fell to 4-17, 1-2 in the conference.

UMES got another solid outing from Whitney Johnson who posted 27 kills, three shy of a back to back 30 kill performance. She added 16 digs for a double double while Caylin Woodward also had one with ten kills and 13 digs. Christina Estebane' wasn't to be outdone, picking up her double double with 55 assists and 14 digs defensively.

Leah Amundson also had double digit digs with 16.

The previous day the Hawks had played a marathon match with Morgan State, going five game and over two and a half hours before winning. The fatigue showed as the Hornets caught UMES off guard and took games two and four, both by the score of 30-24, forcing a fifth game.

The Hawks again won the service war as they tallied 12 aces. Five came off of the hot hand of freshman Shaylin Sommer. She tallied eight in a match earlier this season against Robert Morris University. Woodward added three while Estebane' and Adora Luster had two each.

After ten games in two days the Hawks will take a couple of days off before preparing for their next match, a MEAC contest against Hampton University as UMES hosts them on Friday, October 12th at 7:00 pm. The match will be the kick-off to Hawk Hysteria, the event formerly known as Midnight Madness.
