Box Score
HAMPTON, VA. - The Hampton Lady Pirates edged the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team, 4-0 and 3-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Hampton, Virginia.
The Lady Hawks were in control for most of game two thanks to an early run and a solid pitching performance from Kristen Greenwood. Mishayla Truttman singled to lead off the top of the second and Greenwood reached base on an error by Hampton second baseman Brittany Davis. Tiana Strother walked to load the bases and Shadawn Paige doubled to center scoring Truttman, but Greenwood was nailed at the plate to keep the Lady Hawks lead at 1-0.
On the mound Greenwood allowed just one hit through the first four innings before the Lady Pirates broke through in the fifth. HU's Casandra Toole led off the inning with a single to center and she was replaced by pinch runner Joselyn Matthews who promptly stole second base. With a runner in scoring position Angela Balser followed with a double to left plating Matthews and knotting the score at one apiece.
Maggie Wolfe opened the sixth with a home run and Hampton took advantage of two Lady Hawk errors to score another run and provide the final 3-1 margin.
Despite surrendering just four hits and two earned runs, Greenwood (2-5) was the losing pitcher of record thanks to a slightly better performance by Hampton's Jada Jeffries (3-3).
Amanda Black paced Hampton in game one, allowing just one hit while striking out seven through five innings of work (7-1).
Offensively Hampton got all of the runs it needed in the first thanks to an RBI single by Maggie Wolfe who eventually crossed the plate herself on a wild pitch by Truttman (0-4).
The Lady Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning behind a solo shot to right-center by Brittany Davis and a passed ball.
UMES will not have much time off, next facing off with LaSalle in a doubleheader on March 21 at Hawks Field.
