PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) (6-18, 3-0 MEAC) used a six run fourth inning to sweep Coppin State University (CSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series. They won today's game three, 15-4.
UMES who pounded out 25 runs in yesterday's wins found themselves behind early to the Eagles. CSU (0-19, 0-3 MEAC) got to Hawk starter Jamar Cadejuste for one run in the first inning and three in the third. DeShawn Daniel opened the game with a double through the left side and later scored on a Teon Richburg ground out after Sebastian Fomenko moved Daniel over on a sacrifice bunt.
Cadejuste lasted just two and two thirds innings allowing six hits and four earned runs. Despite the rough start UMES made sure their starter didn't take the loss.
The Hawks posted one run in the third as Justin Hoban reached on a fielder's choice and plated Tyler Winch who had reached earlier on a walk.
In the fourth the Hawks got the bats going scoring six runs on four hits and a Coppin error. Josh Dean led-off with a walk and promptly stole second. Ken Richardson singled up the middle, collecting the RBI on Dean's run. After an error put Richardson on second James Walls walked and Winch's fly out put Richardson on third. Walls stole second base followed by an Eric Gaines walk that loaded the bases. Joel Gonzalez then picked up his only hit of the day; a single to right that plated Walls and Richardson and put Gaines on second. It was first and third, but not for long as Gonzalez stole second. A Hoban walk then again loaded the bases. Kevin Hillenburg then picked up a pair of RBI on a single to right that also moved Hoban to third. Having batted around Dean came up again and recorded an infield single that scored Hoban for the sixth run of the inning.
UMES went on to add two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, extending their lead to 10-4. Winch and Walls got the runs in the fifth, both on errors while Dean scored in the sixth, continuing his hot hitting after leading off with a single and stealing second.
The Hawks added a five spot in the bottom of the eighth, pushing their lead over ten and enforcing the mercy rule in the bottom of the eighth.
Daniel Sterling got the win, relieving Cadejuste and working four and one third innings of no hit ball, issuing one walk and striking out four. Brian White worked the eighth, allowing just one hit.
On the day Dean was on fire, going 2-2 with three runs, an RBI and three stolen bases. Hoban collected four RBI on a 1-3 game while Gonzalez, Richardson, Walls and Winch all scored twice.
Coppin's Harry Williams went 2-3 with a pair of RBI while Daniel was 3-4 with a pair of runs.
The Hawks next travel on Wednesday to Mt. Saint Mary's for a non-conference tilt. They travel to Delaware State this weekend for a three game MEAC series. Their next home game is April 7 & 8 against Norfolk State.
