WASHINGTON D.C. - Corey Brown scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and Ed Tyson added 10 of his 13 after intermission to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to a 63-60 win over Howard In a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium. The win snapped a 12-game skid for the Hawks (4-26 overall, 1-17 in the MEAC) and gave them their first conference win of the season.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Bison (9-21 overall, 5-13 in the MEAC), who got off a slow start and compounded their problems with several untimely turnovers (19). The Hawks came out loose and jumped out to an early lead and eventually built a 31-21 advantage at the half on the scoring of Brown and Antonio McMillon, who combined for 20 of ther team's points.
UMES expanded its lead to 14 to start the second half before a Howard rally got them back into the game. But the Bison displayed a lack of poise on some key possessions and the Hawks were able to escape with the victory.
Howard again relied very heavily on its three-point shooting as 32 of its 58 attempts came from beyond the arc. They made only 10 for 31 percent. Darek Mitchell again led the Bison in scoring with 17 points while Darryl Hudson contributed 16 and Will Gant added 10.
McMillon finished with 16 for the Hawks and Tyson tallied 13.
UMES returns to action Wednesday in Raleigh for the #6/#11 matchup of the MEAC Tournament.
