LADY HAWKS DROP TWO AT NCAT SOFTBALL INVITATIONAL

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team dropped a close 5-4 contest to non-conference foe Winston-Salem State (WSSU) its first matchup at the NCAT Invitational on March 2. The Lady Hawks lost their contest against the host Aggies, 24-3 later that day.

UMES (1-3) outhit WSSU 9-6 and were led by sophomore Kendra Saunders' 3-3 outing. Mishayla Truttman picked up a pair of hits and went 2-4 while Brooke Downey, Brittney Anderson and Tamika Wills each picked up one hit. Saunders also had two RBI while Kristen Greenwood drove in one run.

The Lady Hawks took an early 3-0 lead when Greenwood drove in Saunders in the first inning and Saunders' inside the park home run scored two runs in the top of the third.

The Lady Rams scored in the bottom of the same inning and scored four runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.

Saunders crossed the plate in the sixth inning to close the Hawks within a run of the lead, but that is the closest they would get as UMES left three stranded in the seventh.

In the contest against NCAT, the Aggies outhit the Hawks 18-5 and had 17 RBI compared to three by UMES.

NCAT scored one run in the first inning before taking advantage of four Hawk errors in the second, pounding out 13 runs on eight hits that stanza.

UMES picked up three runs and three hits in the third inning. Jaleesa Lewis and Truttman each singled while Saunders' left field double drove in Brooke Downey. Truttman picked up a pair of RBI when her hit scored Saunders and Lewis.

The Hawks will try to rebound when they face Coppin State ina doubleheader on March 7 in Baltimore.
