SPARTANS TOO MUCH FOR HAWKS

NORFOLK, VA. - Alyssa Velazquez and Leekycia Brown each tossed a five-inning shutout to lead the Norfolk State (NSU) softball team to a 12-0, 8-0 doubleheader sweep of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) on March 31 at the NSU Softball Field.

In the first game, NSU scored six times in the third to break it open. Jewel White had a home run, while Meghan Ramsey added a sac fly and Hitomi Greene an RBI single in the frame.

The Spartans added five more runs in the fourth. Greene had a three-run, bases-clearing double, and she scored at the end of the play on a throwing error by UMES (2-15).

Velazquez improved to 4-8 with the win for the Spartans, allowing one isngle in the fourth to Mishayla Truttman. Kristen Greenwood (2-8) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, in four innings.

NSU scored in every inning in game 2. Ramsey had an RBI double and Micki Rodriguez an RBI single in the first. In the second inning, Jennifer Morrison doubled and later scored on an error by UMES to give NSU a 3-0 lead.

Greene had an RBI single and Rodriguez an RBI groundout in the third inning, and Eure scored Morrison with her hit down the right-field line in the fourth.

Jaleesa Lewis, Kendra Saunders and Truttman each finished 1-2 in the nightcap.

Truttman (0-7) took the loss in game 2, allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits in four and one-third innings.

UMES returns to action on April 5 with a doubleheader against Delaware State at 2:00pm at Hawks Field.
