April 18, 2007

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Norfolk State (UMES) picked up a pair of non-conference wins over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), 11-0, 9-1, this afternoon at Hawks Field. The Spartans complete a season sweep of UMES with the wins and improve to 21-20 on the season while the Lady Hawks fall to 2-26.

NSU outhit the Hawks 9-4 in the first decision and took a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Mishayla Truttman's left field single with two outs moved Brooke Downey into scoring position in the third, but both runners were left stranded when UMES could not get its bats going.

The Spartans plated three runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth to end the game with the slaughter rule. Downey and Kristen Greenwood each went 1-2 while Truttman and Jaleesa Lewis finished 1-3.

Lewis hit her first career home run in the second decision against NSU. The freshman from Milford, Delaware smacked a solo one into left field in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough to hold off the Spartans, who capitalized on three Hawk errors in the top of the inning and plated five runs to seal with win.

Lewis finished a perfect 2-2 with one run and one RBI while Truttman and Greenwood also picked up a hit for UMES.

The maroon and gray return to action on Saturday when they host Winston-Salem State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
