PRINCESS ANNE, MD - - The UMES softball team was swept in a doubleheader with Hampton in non-conference action on Sunday at Hawks Field. The maroon and gray was shut out 10-0 in the first game and later dropped the second contest 12-3.
The Lady Pirates (29-9) scored 10 runs on 14 hits in the opener and 12 runs on 13 hits in the nightcap. Kendra Saunders paced the Hawks, going 3-5 with one run and two RBI while Mishayla Truttman picked up a pair of hits to finish 2-5 with one run.
Tamika Willis, Jaleesa Lewis and Arika Baldwin each picked up one hit for UMES (2-30).
Maggie Wolfe singled in a run, and Gonzales and Jeffries each drove in a run as Hampton notched three runs in the fourth to take lead 8-0 in the first contest. In the fifth, after Liggins tripled in a run, Davis followed that with a right field triple to put the Pirates up 10-0.
In the second decision, HU had a 2-0 lead before Garcia's double in the third spurred a four run stanza for the Pirates. Amanda Black singled in Garcia and Joselyn Matthews crossed the plate before Davis hit an inside the park home run and plated two more runs for the 6-0 lead.
Hampton added six more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. Davis and Wolfe each had back-to-back home runs to cap the inning.
UMES answered with three runs of its own in the bottom fifth when Saunders doubled in two runs for the Hawks. Kristen Greenwood later drove in Saunders for the maroon and gray's third run of the game.
The Lady Hawks will return to action on Saturday, May 5 when they face Morgan State in a MEAC doubleheader at 1:00pm in Baltimore.
