PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - The Delaware State softball team downed the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), 11-3 and 17-0, in a pair of games this afternoon at Hawks Field. With the loss the Lady Hawks fall to 2-17 (0-5 MEAC) while DSU improves to 10-20 (3-0 MEAC).
In game one, the maroon and gray trailed 5-0 before Kristen Greenwood capitalized on an error by the Hornets to put UMES on the board.
Shadawn Paige's single in the fourth plated Kendra Saunders, while Jaleesa Lewis scored the third run for the Hawks in the fifth after crossing the plate on an error by DSU pitcher Megan Lambertz.
Paige went 2-3 with one RBI to lead the squad while Greenwood, Saunders, Lewis, and Ashley Taylor each picked up a hit. Lewis, Greenwood and Saunders also finished with one run.
Lewis had the lone hit for UMES in the second contest as the Hawks committed a season high nine errors. Candice Shockley and Nicole Demers each had two-run homers in the first as the Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead. DSU added another five runs in the second and took advantage of four Hawk errors in the third to plate four more.
Meghan Wilson got the win in for the Hornets in game two, allowing one hit while striking out six in the complete game.
UMES will try to get back on track on Saturday with a conference doubleheader against Coppin State beginning at 1:00pm at Hawks Field.
