Box Score
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) allowed ten runs in the second and third innings and then rebounded to plate four of their own in the sixth but it was too little too late for the Hawks, who fell to Navy in game three of a three game series 10-4, giving Navy the series sweep.
UMES starter Ken Richardson got hit hard early on Sunday, allowing ten earned runs on 12 hits in five innings of work. Navy took advantage of the Hawk starter after he worked a one, two, three first tinning.
They used five hits to plate four runs in the second and then turned around to jump on Richardson again in the third, plating six runs on five hits, including a triple and three hit batters.
The Hawks could forget about the four scored in the second as they used a four run sixth inning of their own to cut into the Mids' lead. Richardson, who moved to right field after the fifth inning, led-off with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Eric Gaines then reached on an error from the third baseman and James Walls singled through the right side to load the bases. Joel Gonzalez then reached on a fielder's choice that didn't record an out. Gonzlaez went to second, Walls to third and Gaines and Richardson crossed the plate. Richardson officially scored on an error by the pitcher, trying to get him out at home. A wild pitch then allowed Walls to score and an error on the new pitcher allowed Gonzalez to also cross the plate. All in all the Hawks plated four on just one hit and three Navy errors.
It turned out to be that third inning that did in the Hawks as Tyler Winch relieved Richardson after five innings and then worked three innings of one hit ball, walking one and striking out one.
On the day UMES collected just five hits with Richardson getting a pair. Gonzalez, Walls, and Kevin Hillenburg collected one hit each.
