DOVER, DEL. - The Delaware State softball team used the big inning to sweep a doubleheader from Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday.
The Hornets scored seven runs in the first inning and five in the fourth en route to a 14-0 win in game one. In the nightcap, DSU scored nine runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 12-4 victory.
In the opener, Brittney Ruark tossed a two-hit shutout and four players drove in two runs each for the Hornets.
Delaware State jumped out in front with seven runs in the first inning. Jacinda Poni had a two-run double and Samantha Snow singled in two in the inning. Megan Lambertz knocked in a run on an infield single and Sha Tabor drove in another on a sacrifice fly.
The Hornets tacked on two runs in the second to open up a 9-0 lead.
In game two, Delaware State scored nine runs in the fourth to erase a 4-0 deficit.
Maryland-Eastern Shore scored first with four runs in the top of the fourth. Tiffany Redden and Tiana Strother had run-scoring hits in the inning for the Lady Hawks.
Delaware State answered with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Hornets sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning. Diana Gomez drove in the first run on a pinch hit single. Delaware State pulled to within 4-2 when Snow scored on a wild pitch. Lambertz then came to the plate with two runners on and hit one down the right field line, allowing her to circle the bases for a three-run inside-the-park homer that put the Hornets ahead 5-4. Shockley followed with a two-run shot in left center to give DSU a 7-4 lead. The Hornets added two more runs before being retired in the inning.
The doubleheader sweep gives the Hornets an overall record of 22-27. UMES fell to 4-34.
The maroon and gray returns to action on Saturday, May 5 with a non-conference doubleheader against Morgan State beginning at 1:00 pm.
