WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American University (AU) women's volleyball team controlled the second and third sets in their win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-16). UMES was able to shut down AU's 6-8 middle blockers, the Guinness Book of World Record's tallest female twins, but could not push to win a set for the first time this season, bringing their record to 17-8.
Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) had a near double-double for the Lady Hawks, posting team highs of 28 assists and nine digs. Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./St. Joseph H.S.) led the attack with a team high 12 kills and Leah Amundson (Tucson, Ariz.) tied EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© with the team high nine digs.
The Lady Hawks (17-8) came out ready to play in the first set, tying the score 15 times with 10 lead changes. UMES called timeout after a kill by AU's Rubena Sukaj tied the score at 23 all. Another AU kill had the Eagles on set point, but Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) responded with a kill to tie the set for the last time. Back to back Eagle kills from Sukaj and Rebecca Heath ended the set 26-24.
Leading AU's attack, Sukaj had a game-high 16 kills and Heath netted 13 respectively. Christina Nash had a game-high 34 assists and Ivana Cebakova finished with a game-high 17 digs.
UMES will be looking to stay on top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Friday, October 17 as they take on rival Howard University at home in the William P. Hytche Center.
