PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Three errors proved to be costly for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in game one as Lehigh University took game one of a double header by a score of 6-1. The Hawks posted just one lone run while the pitching was solid, allowing just four of the six runs earned. It was 3-1 before the Mountain Hawks posted a three run fifth inning.
UMES scored their lone run in the fourth inning. Pat Hercinger drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Coppi. With two out Russell Deutschmann singled to right center, plating Hercinger.
Matt Witte took the hill for UMES and threw a solid five innings. He allowed just seven hits, four earned runs, five walks and recorded three strike outs in his first collegiate start. He would get hit with the loss. In the other dugout Andrew Berger would pick up the win, throwing five inning, allowing just one earned run, one walk and striking out six UMES batters.
Lehigh struck first, plating a lone run in the second, third and fourth innings. They would post three in the fifth inning. After that junior reliever Elliott Arrington would work three hitless inning for the Hawks while Carl Huber threw the ninth, sitting the Mountain Hawks down in order. Arrington walked two and struck out a pair.
In the fifth Liam O'Connor reached as the lead-off batter for Lehigh on an error and later in the inning Austin Borden would double but wind up on third after a throwing error. Both would score accounting for the unearned runs.
The Fighting Hawks tallied seven hits in the game, the same as Lehigh. Josh Dunham, Ken Richardson, Mike Guy, Tyler Love, Remo Orsini, Hercinger and Deutschmann all had one hit each.
Lehigh's Borden would go 2-5 with a pair of runs and two RBI while Marshall Logan was also 2-5. Joe Ercolano, Andy Russell, Geoff Campbell and Marshall all had one RBI apiece.
Game two is scheduled to get under way at 3:00 p.m. at Hawks Stadium.
