LADY HAWKS HANG TOUGH IN 4-0 LOSS TO HAMPTON

March 21, 2008

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. - After an inspiring first game the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks Softball team wanted to show everyone that they are indeed an up-and-coming team in the MEAC as they lost a valiant 4-0 decision to last year's regular season champion and tournament host Hampton on Friday at Briarfield Park.

UMES picked up the respectable loss and fell to 4-12 overall as they got two hits apiece from freshmen Cassandra Carlos (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch H.S.) and Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy).

Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.) took the loss to move her record to 3-4 on the season despite an impressive performance against a team picked to finish second in the conference's southern division. Truttman gave up just three earned runs on four hits while striking out four in all six innings of work.

Her counterpart, Ashley Weissenbach had a sound pitching performance as well, allowing no runs and tossing five strikeouts.

Hampton mustered most of their offense behind their five, second, and seven hitters who combined for all four RBIs on three hits and one run. Amanda Black led the charge by going 1-3 with two scores.

The Lady Pirates got on the board first with a two-out RBI single from Angela Balser. They would pick up one more run from Black who reached base on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.

After sitting down the first two Hampton batters in the third, Truttman would walk Balser which led to an Evelyn Garcia RBI triple to extend the lead to 3-0 going into the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Hampton loaded the bases with two out and seemed poised to light up the score board following a Black RBI single. However, Truttman would get herself out of the jam as she got the next batter to fly out to center, leaving the runners stranded. The Lady Pirates left eight on base in the game.

Logan tried igniting a rally for UMES with a two out single in the seventh but that was as far as it would get for the Lady Hawks.

UMES continues on in the tournament later this afternoon as they face Elizabeth City State beginning at 2:00 p.m.
