Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. - After finding their hitting groove at the end of day one, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks Softball team found themselves falling 2-0 to Morgan State University (MSU) in a pitching duel on Saturday at Briarfield Park.

Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.) gave up a two-run blast to Tamra Griffin in the bottom of the first that proved to be the difference. Truttman was near flawless the rest of the game as she allowed just two hits. On the day, she gave up only two earned runs on four hits while striking out eight in all six innings of work.

The Lady Bears' Megan Johnson took the complete game win as she pitched a gem of her own, giving up two hits to go along with seven strikeouts.

UMES (5-13) picked up their only two hits of the day from Jaleesa Lewis (Milford, Del./Milford H.S.) and Ashlee Baker (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Tombstone H.S.).

Griffin sparked the MSU offense by recording two RBIs and a run, while Dominisha Britton added the lone other run and a hit as well. Karlana Ingram and Carissa Washington rounded out the hitting for the Lady Bears with one each.

The Lady Hawks tried to make a rally in the top of the fifth inning behind with Baker opening things up with a base hit to right field. Lewis also singled to right with two out to put a pair on. However, MSU would get out of the inning unscathed as Johnson got the next batter to line out to second base to end the threat. UMEs left seven runners stranded, while MSU left six on base.

UMES looks to continue on in the tournament as they now get set to face Elizabeth City State in an elimination game starting at 11:00 a.m.
