LADY HAWKS FALL 12-4 TO HAMPTON

April 20, 2008

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. - Although it took a few weeks to complete and weather conditions to overcome, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seemed to benefit at the start but could not hang on to an early lead in a 12-4 loss to Hampton University on Sunday at Lady Pirates Field.

The series finale was a make-up date from a postponement earlier this season. It looked like the contest was headed for another delay but both teams braced the elements for five innings before the game was called.

With the loss UMES drops to 7-28 overall and 0-8 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.

Amanda Black pitched all five innings to earn the win for Hampton, allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits to go along with four strikeouts, while Marielle Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) gave up 12 runs (10 earned) and 10 hits in the losing effort.

Offensively, UMES was led by Bonnie Heineken (North Pole, Alaska/North Pole H.S.) who finished one-of-three at the plate with two RBI. Both Dawnita Leigh (Hughesville, Md./College of Southern Maryland) and Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.) plated a run apiece, while the latter also added a base knock.

The Lady Pirates were led by the top half of the order on offense, including Ashley Weissenbach as she finished two-of-three in the batter's box, with four RBI and three runs.

A Truttman RBI single that drove home Cassandra Carlos (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch H.S.) in the top of the first put the Lady Hawks ahead 1-0.

However, Hampton would regain the lead in the home half of the first with a pair of runs that saw Weissenbach double in a run and then score the other off a UMES error to make it 2-1.

Hampton cushioned their advantage in the third frame with a Brittany Davis two-run homerun to center and a Jennifer Cuellar RBI base hit down the left field line.

The Lady Pirates would add two more in the fourth before UMES rallied to put three up in the top of fifth that was capped off with a Heineken single to right field that drove in Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and Brooke Downey (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico H.S.) to cut the lead to 7-4.

Unfortunately, any hope of a comeback would end with a five run fifth inning from the Lady Pirates that concluded with Weissenbach doubling in three runners prior to the game being called.

UMES will now travel to Emmitsburg, Md. for a non-conference doubleheader matchup with Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 23. The action is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
