Box Score
EMMITSBURG, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had costly errors and were ineffective on the offensive end as they were blanked twice in a non-conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's University (MOUNT) on Wednesday. The Lady Hawks dropped the opener 11-0 and fell in the rubber match 5-0.
The Mountaineers sent Jamie Fowler to the hill where she allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out 12 in five complete innings for the game one win, while Marielle Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) took the loss as she gave up three hits, six runs (four earned), and walked five.
UMES (7-30) picked up their only two hits of the contest from Cassandra Carlos (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch H.S.) and Tiana Strother (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers H.S.).
Amanda Burk led the way for the Mount (19-34) with a pair of hits, RBI, and runs. Teammate Jenna Zimmerman also chipped in with two base knocks as she plated a run and scored another.
A two hit, five run first inning that was sparked by an Allie Vadas RBI single through the left side gave the Mountaineers all the run support they needed. They would go on to score off a sacrifice fly, wild pitch and a couple of fielder's choices, not what the Lady Hawks had in mind.
The Mount added runs in the second and third innings off a Burk solo homerun and RBI base hit which extended their advantage to 7-0.
Fowler's no-hitter was broken up in the bottom of the third when UMES' Strother singled to center.
However, the Mountaineers would add four runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the fourth off errors and wild pitches that extended their margin to 11-0.
The Lady Hawks had put two on with two-out in fifth following a Carlos single through the left side, but Fowler would retire the final batter to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Game two was more closely contested but the Lady Hawks inability to score was the determinant in the end. UMES cranked out three hits compared to nine from the Mount.
Amanda Hanson got the win for the Mount, giving up three hits, no runs, and striking out 12, while Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.) allowed nine hits and five earned runs in the losing cause.
UMES' Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy), Dawnita Leigh (Hughesville, Md./College of Southern Maryland), and Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop McNamara H.S.) each had a hit.
Courtney Zingle paced the Mountaineers by going two-of-three at the plate, with four RBI and a run, while Vadas had two hits and plated a run.
The Mount took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Zingle base hit to right center that drove home a pair of runners.
A three-run sixth inning from the Mountaineers that featured a Zingle two-run homerun to left field and a Vadas RBI base hit would widen their margin to 5-0.
The Lady Hawks would open up the seventh inning with back-to-back singles from Logan and Leigh. Nonetheless, the Mount would sit down the next three batters to end the game.
Overall, the Mountaineers stranded 18 runners whereas the Lady Hawks left nine on base.
UMES will return home to host Coppin State in a four-game series on April 26 and 27. The Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. on each day with the first three counted as conference games.
