NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team came home from Buffalo, N.Y. ready to play against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Norfolk State in a non-conference match. The Lady Hawks took control of nearly every category beating the Spartans 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-12).
The Lady Hawks were dominant in this match leading in kills, assists and digs. Boasting only six hitting errors, UMES tied the Spartans in service aces (1) and total blocks (3).
The first set was all UMES, who got off to a 6-0 start. Norfolk State took their second timeout of the set after back-to-back hitting errors gave the Hawks a 19-8 lead. UMES then went on a 5-0 run with huge kills from Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) and Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados/Clarendon Coll.) that ended with a service error from Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas/Midland College). Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./St. Joseph H.S.) then ended the set on a kill from an over passed ball.
The Lady Hawks went on another 6-0 run in the second set, pushing the score to 17-6. After back and forth rallies, the Spartans pushed back and brought the score to 20-10. After a 5-0 run, UMES took the second set 25-10.
Edwards led the Hawks attack with eight kills, followed by Johnson with six and EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '©, Joseph and Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) who all had five kills a piece. EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© had her fourth straight double-double posting game-highs of 18 assists and 13 digs.
Angie Clewis had a game-high nine kills. Sloange Honore tied EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© with 18 assists for the game-high, and Jourdan Ellison also tied EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© for the game-high with 13 digs.
UMES will travel to Williamsburg, Va. this weekend to participate in the William & Mary Colonial Challenge. They will face off against William & Mary, Elon and Radford.
