LADY HAWKS BATTLE TRIBE, FALL IN FOUR SETS

Sept. 19, 2008

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team came out strong in the first set but eventually fell to the Colonial Challenge hosts William & Mary 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-15).

The Lady Hawks went on a 5-0 run early in the first set. Both teams fought back and forth while UMES held onto a small lead. William & Mary called a timeout after the Hawks went on a 3-0 run, sparked by a Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica H.S.) kill, pushed the score to 15-11. UMES never fell behind and stretched their lead to six before closing out the set, 25-19.

The Tribe then took control of the remaining sets, committing only nine hitting errors on 93 attacks as Kim Mount finished with 36 assists.

"We had almost 28 hitting errors in the match," said Head Coach Don Metil. "And when you're playing a team that digs 17-18 balls per game, you just can't afford to make errors like that, especially against a high-caliber team."

Nationally ranked outside hitter Erin Skipper continued her stellar year by putting down 10 kills with zero errors. Lauren Powell was just shy of a double-double with a team high 11 kills and nine digs. Ginny Bray tied Skipper with 10 kills. And Lindsey Pflunger stepped up defensively for William & Mary with a game high 20 digs.

Christina Estebane' (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) continued her double-double dominance, tying Mount with the game high 36 assists and picking up a team high 17 digs. Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) had the game high 14 kills, while Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./St. Joseph H.S.) was the only other Hawk in double figures with 12 kills.

UMES will look for their first win in Williamsburg tomorrow against Elon at 10:30 a.m. before facing Radford at 4:30 p.m. Stay on top of the matches by watching the action via streaming video or by following the live stats on umeshawks.com thanks to William & Mary Athletics.
