UMES SWEEPS FIRST DAY OF TOURNAMENT; TOP TIGERS 3-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Things are looking good for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Volleyball team. They recorded their fourth consecutive win, a 3-0 victory over Savannah State (25-7, 25-11, 25-14) in the nightcap of the Lady Rams Invitational. Now, 9-6 overall, the Lady Hawks go into tomorrow's competition facing host Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), who also recorded two wins on the day.

UMES dominated the first two sets, outscoring the Lady Tigers 50-18. Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) had four service aces in set one alone, three of which came in UMES' 7-0 run to start the match.

Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica) and Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./St. Joseph) tied for a game high nine kills, identical to earlier in the day, when they topped St. Augustine's 3-0.

In UMES' earlier win the Hawks dispatched the Falcons in 55 minutes. They topped that in the win over SSU in just 50 minutes.

Edwards put down all nine of her kills with no errors and hit .600. Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bayside) was also perfect on the match with six kills on six attempts, a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© finished with a game high 22 assists and five aces while Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) led the Lady Hawks with a game high six digs.

Savannah State (6-9) jumped out to its first lead of the match in the beginning of the third set, but the run was stopped quickly on a kill by Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados/Clarendon JC). The Lady Tigers then tied the game for the third time on a kill by Brittany Lewis and took the lead on an attack error by Bowens. The Lady Hawks then rallied to tie the game, going on a 13-3 run that would end the match.

Lewis and Shantice White led the Lady Tigers with four kills each and April Hayes finished with a team high 10 assists. UMES outscored the outmatched Lady Tigers 75-32 over the span of three games as Savannah State committed as many attack errors (15) as they recorded kills (15).

UMES will face WSSU at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning for the second time this season. This match will determine the number one seed for the championship rounds of the tournament.
