PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - What would a new athletic year be without a proper kick-off? The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) thinks just that and is scheduled to proceed with the 2009 version of Hawk Hysteria, an athletic and energetic start to the 2009-10 season that features, volleyball, dance performances, team scrimmages, giveaways, contests and the introduction of this year's basketball squads.
This is the ninth consecutive year of what is now called Hawk Hysteria and it has grown over the years to one of the most anticipated events on campus. "Over my time here, it has taken on a life of its own," said Women's Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "It's more than basketball; it's become a campus event."
Men's Head Coach Frankie Allen added," There's an excitement here that the campus community gets behind."
The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on the campus of UMES. It starts with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up between two teams in the northern division of women's volleyball. The 13-6 Hawks host Hampton in an exciting match-up. The Hawks conference winning streak is on the line, a record that dates back over two seasons.
Immediately following the match the net comes down and the baskets go up as the official kick-off to the 2009-10 basketball season gets underway with contests, giveaways and autograph settings. Fans will have their chance to pick up the hot off the presses volleyball, women's hoops and men's hoops posters and get them autographed by the teams.
The UMES Cheerleaders are back like you have never seen them before and will make a special performance while The Diamonds and Ambiance will also perform dance routines.
Then it is all about basketball as the men and women's basketball teams will be introduced and each will play an inter-squad scrimmage showcasing their talent for the crowd. Head Coaches Fred Batchelor and Frankie Allen are excited about their upcoming seasons and will address the Hawk faithful as well.
OC 104 with host Bill Baker will broadcast live, Force One Productions will be handling the music responsibilities and there will be t-shirt giveaways, contests for the kids and more.
Admission is free, doors open at 5:00 p.m. See you there!
