BALTIMORE, Md. - Four players recorded at least six kills as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team topped Morgan State, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-17), in the MEAC opener for both at Hill Field House Tuesday.
Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) led the way for the Hawks (12-6, 1-0) with 10 kills while redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied seven and seniors Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) had six apiece. Johnson also had a match-best six of the Hawks' 11 aces. UMES held Morgan State to just one ace.
Joseph also had a match-high four block assists, helping the visitors to a 6-3 advantage in total blocks.
UMES outhit MSU, .322-.088, dropping the Bears to 5-15 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) chipped in with a solid all-around effort. She registered team-high10 digs with five kills and five assists and a hitting efficiency of .333.
Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) collected 28 of the team's 35 assists on the night as the Hawks won their third consecutive match.
UMES committed just 10 attack errors for the match, hitting an impressive .520 in the second game with a 15-2-25 line.
Morgan State's Ivanti Bush had nine kills for the Bears while Erin Cox tallied eight. Cheryl Savoy (11) and Rhyan Shy (10) led MSU in digs. Christa Rogers had 12 of the Bears' 22 assists.
The Hawks are back in action at Delaware State Sunday at 3 p.m.
