Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) tallied a match-high 12 kills and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team limited North Carolina Central to -.014 percent from the floor in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-15) win on Senior Day at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.

The Eagles had 18 kills and 19 errors on 70 total attacks as the Hawks secured their lowest opponents' hitting percentage of the season, extending their winning streak to 13 matches. The match marked the final one at home for seniors Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.), Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) and improved UMES to 22-6 on the season heading into the MEAC Tournament next weekend at Coppin State. Matchups will be announced Monday.

Woodward led all players with nine digs while freshman Karin Vikterlof (Orebro, Sweden) served a match-best seven aces for the nation's top team in aces per game. Johnson had eight kills on 11 attacks for a .545 percentage and Joseph had four kills, two assists and a dig.

UMES hit .373 (34-9-67) for the match including a blistering .611 in the third set. Redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced UMES with a .714 efficiency.

Leading, 8-5 in the first game the Hawks reeled off six straight points, charging out to a 14-5 edge. Sophomore Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) had a pair of the Hawks' 15 aces in that stretch.

NCCU (8-22) got four more points in the game as UMES took a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles earned the first point of the middle game on a UMES error but the lead was short-lived. Joseph gave her team a 12-6 bulge later in the game but the visitors battled back to within two at 13-11 on consecutive errors from freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas). That was as close as the Division I independent would get, though. The Hawks scored four points in a row to go up, 17-12, and eventually take the game with a Vikterlof ace.

The Hawks led the entire way in the final set, building a quick 10-4 lead, dispatching NCCU in just 61 minutes.

Avaniki Campbell had a team-leading five kills; while Kiarra Brown led the way with 16 assists and Raven King had a team-best seven digs.
