FANS PACK IN FOR CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 14, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) basketball tournament coming to a close, the squads that cheered their teams all week long took to the floor to compete for their own championship title. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was one of nine teams battling it out for their chance to be the 2009 MEAC cheerleading champion.

A twist added by the conference was the all-star contest. As the best of each squad went head-to-head in single competition, they were judged on several categories, including tumbling and degree of difficulty.

North Carolina A&T fans nearly outnumbered hosting Winston-Salem State University's in the early morning affair. The Aggies took home the all star, all-women's division and overall first place trophies, sweeping each of their categories in the competition. South Carolina State University grabbed the Co-Ed Division title.

The Lady Hawks cheered hard but did not place in the competition.
