ORANGEBURG, S.C. - After dropping their first game of the season to Coppin State University (CSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team made a statement by shutting out the Lady Eagles 9-0 in their final game at the South Carolina State Tournament. The Lady Hawks (2-2) finished the contest in five innings.
Freshman Hannah Mills (Parksley, Va.) threw the shut out for UMES in her first collegiate start. She struck out nine, allowing just one hit and walked only two Lady Eagles.
The second inning saw the Lady Hawks bat around, putting in five runs on four hits.
After a single by Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Canada) loaded the bases, Mills reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, scoring one run. CSU's Paige Arnold then struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning before Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) hit a two run single to put the Lady Hawks up 7-0.
Arnold, who gave up nine runs on eight hits, received the loss for the Lady Eagles.
UMES will head back to Princess Anne, Md. and prepare for their home opener against North Carolina Central University on March 10.
