ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team couldn't hold of Hampton University as they fell 9-6 in their first game of the South Carolina State University Tournament.
Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore.) and Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas) each hit doubles and Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out five in her first collegiate start on the mound.
Down 4-3 going into the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Hawks found themselves with the tying run on third and the go ahead runner on second. Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) scored Chelsea Logan on an RBI single with one out to tie the game.
Miranda then doubled to score Hannah Mills (Parksley, Va.) and Hahn, but was caught trying to stretch the hit to a triple for the second out. The next batter grounded out to second to end the inning.
Hampton rallied in the bottom of the inning and tied the score 6-6 with one out. Kelsei Saunders hit a three run homerun to put the Lady Pirates up 9-6. Amanda Black gets the win for Hampton who improves to 5-4 overall.
UMES (0-2) continues play in the tournament March 8 against host South Carolina State. First pitch will be thrown at 10 a.m.
