WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the first time since the men's and women's tennis programs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) were created, both teams have multiple wins in a single season. The wins over University of D.C. (UDC) Saturday afternoon help solidify their places as the best tennis teams in UMES history.
Second year Head Coach Dylan Vickers has done amazing things with the programs.
The men (3-7) dominated UDC, dropping just one singles match. Eastern Shore native Marquet Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) won his #4 singles match 8-1 and Richard Warren (Salem, N.J.) defeated Eric Johnson in #6 singles 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, the dynamic duo of junior Rashad James (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Osvaldo Rivera (Christiansted, U.S.V.I.) downed their opponents 8-2.
Competition on the women's side was closer. UDC took the first two singles matches before Bolanle Abioye (Lagos, Nigeria) and Solana McMillan (Teaneck, N.J.) swept their opponents in straight sets (6-0, 6-0).
LaToya Coltrane's (Temple Hills, Md.) win over Shakira Watford in #6 singles play (6-2,6-1) secured the Lady Hawks win, improving their record to 3-8.
UMES stays on the road, this time traveling to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals Delaware State on April 7. Competition begins at 2 p.m.
